METERPRETER CMDS
Meterpreter exposes its own command set, not a full OS shell. Instead of running whoami
as a Meterpreter command, an equivalent Linux command or Meterpreter’s built-in getuid
(which returns the current user context) or sysinfo
(for system details) must be used. If native OS commands must be used (for example whoami
, ipconfig
, or Linux id
), use shell
or execute
from Meterpreter to spawn a real command shell on the target and run them there. Don’t assume common cmd/linux utilities are Meterpreter commands. Use Meterpreter’s equivalents (getuid
, sysinfo
, ps
, etc.) or drop to a shell to run native commands.

NAVIGATION CMDS
The “channel” refers to the network connection between the attacker's machine and the compromised host. In this case a reverse TCP link established from the target back to the attacker. That connection was bootstrapped by a small Meterpreter stager on the target, which initialized the outbound connection to the attacker's listener, and then fetched and executed the larger Meterpreter stage. The stager’s role is to create a reliable transport; the stage delivers the full-featured Meterpreter payload and opens the interactive session that can be used to control the target over that channel.
